Trump Demands Imprisonment of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Deploy in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on social media Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements coincide with the deployment of state military personnel in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, despite vehement protests from state officials such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I am staying put."

The governor responded via online channels, stating: "I will not back down. Now Trump is demanding arrests of elected officials resisting his authority. What's next on the path to full-blown autocracy?"

As of midweek, military troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood training facility, an army base roughly 50 miles from the city, as the administration pushes forward with its hardline crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", even though official statistics indicate notable reductions in many offenses, including murders.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard members were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard forces readying for deployment, according to reports. Officials reportedly stated the troops would avoid police functions but would secure federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with Texas national guard insignia were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Vehicles labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the military base for safety concerns until early December.

The administration has escalated deportation operations in the city in recent weeks, sparking protests, especially near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city initiated legal action targeting the administration, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, urging a federal judge to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on the city and state, calling it "unlawful and risky".

Legal proceedings on their case is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on that day banning ICE officers and related personnel from using municipal facilities as staging areas for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged Trump of using troops as "political props" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on the previous day, Pritzker said that the president is trying to "justify and normalize the presence of military personnel under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law limits the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has said he would be prepared to activate the emergency powers, which permits a president to dispatch active duty military in regions that are failing to suppress an insurrection or are resisting federal law.

Since starting his new administration, Trump has dispatched or discussed sending troops to over ten urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the military presence is necessary to fight violence and defend immigration agents.

Statistics shows that serious offenses nationwide has declined in recent years. In the city, for example, homicides were down nearly one-third to 278 through late summer, according to police data.

New survey data released on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the sending of troops without an foreign danger.
