In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
