The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
