A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A bill presented on Monday would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to politics.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
